SENIOR CITIZENS DECLARE: WE ARE STILL PART OF THE SOLUTION

SAN PEDRO, LAGUNA—KABAYANIHAN FOUNDATION (KF) and the Senior Citizens of San Pedro, Laguna have joined the call for a cultural revolution.

Kabayanihan Foundation co-founder and chairman emeritus Atty. Alex Lacson explained, “The San Pedro senior citizens demonstrate the vitality of our seniors [citizens] and their willingness to continue helping us build a great Filipino nation.”

Jun Urbano, the pop culture icon known for his well-loved character Mr. Shooli, was announced as the Kabayanihan ambassador and spokesman for senior citizens. He talked about the opportunity senior citizens have to influence more Filipinos to adopt a culture of greatness. Other speakers during the event included 1st District of Laguna representative Hon. Danilo Fernandez, Municipal Mayor of Laguna Hon. Calixto R. Cataquiz as well as retired general and Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Ramon Farolan.

Senior Citizens Party List Congressman Godofredo V. Arquiza emphasized that with two senior citizen representatives now in Congress, the sector has the potential to make a difference on a national level.

Speakers from the youth included Undersecretary Christopher S. Arnuco, Chairman and CEO of the National Youth Commission and Paulina Miranda, Sangguniang Kabataan secretary of Brgy. Bel-Air in Makati. Paulina stressed how important it was to have senior citizens serve as powerful examples for young leaders like her. The highlight of the event was the keynote speech given by Ms. Ballsy Aquino-Cruz and the pledge of commitment of the senior citizens entitled, Panata ng Aming Henerasyon.

With the battle cry, “We are still part of the solution!” the 2000-strong audience at the Pacita Astrodome last February 4 was made up of senior citizen groups from San Pedro, Biňan, Bulacan and Manila. They cheered on the unveiling of the “12 Little Things Every Senior Citizen Can Do To Help Our Country.” Forty representatives of various citizen groups signed the plaque to signify their commitment to doing their part in the cultural revolution.

“This event is the first of its kind,” noted Paul Chua, Kabayanihan Foundation trustee, “While most events towards nation-building focus on the youth, we are very proud to recognize the wisdom and contribution of senior citizens as they take an active role in achieving this cultural revolution.”

The event was sponsored by Team Pinoy Inc., Business Mirror, Artistshop, and the Municipality of San Pedro, Laguna.

Below is the list of the 12 Little Things for the Senior Citizens:

12 Little Things Our Senior Citizens Can Do To Help Our Country

1. Lead your family to pray daily for our country and our people.

2. Exercise daily. Eat healthy food.

3. Lead your family in cleaning your surroundings, including the street fronting your house.

4. Obey traffic rules and follow the law. Be a good model to the young.

5. Men should not pee or jingle anywhere in the street. Be a good example to our youth.

6. Do not engage in gossip, rumor, or character assassination. Promote friendship, harmony and unity in your community.

7. Speak positively about the Filipino and our Philippines. Be an ambassador of our race.

8. Buy local. Buy Filipino. Have faith in the Filipino.

9. Conserve water. Plant a tree. Dispose your garbage properly.

10. Report any crime or illegal activity, especially those against the youth. Protect the young from physical and moral harm.

11. During elections, support and vote for the best candidates. Be part of the change.

12. Adopt a scholar or donate to scholarship programs. Invest in the future of our youth
